Brown Hawk-Owl パナソニック FZ-300

A Brown Hawk-Owl was hunting after sunset. I was impressed to be able to capture the recognizable silhouette of the owl that even with a lightweight and compact camera Panasonic FZ-300.

日没後に里山でアオバズクが狩りをしていたので、ブリッジカメラ（パナソニック DMC-FZ300）で撮影に挑戦しました。機種として新しくはなく、もちろん高性能カメラには画質では劣りますが、軽量コンパクトカメラでアオバズクとわかるシルエットが撮れたことに感激しました。

設定はプログラムモード、ピント合わせはマニュアルです。観察したい気持ちが強かったので、撮影はそこそこに終えてました。私にとっては画像での記録はこれで十分です。

4月の確認種 Bird Species in Apr.

その年に見聞した鳥の記録を、文一総合出版発行の野鳥雑誌BIRDER1月号付録の手帳にある日本産鳥類目録で管理しています。4月30日の種数チェックでは167種で33種増えました。

The year list of mine on the 30 April had 167 species, added 33 species after the end of March. The number of species increased due to the observation of seabirds and summer bird arrival time.

モズがケラを捕獲した後に、咥えたまま飛び去りました。おそらく巣へ向かったのでしょう。巣立ち雛が見られる日が楽しみです。

Bird Songs at Sunrise 早朝の鳥のコーラス

夜明けの約40分前から座って、春の里山の鳥たちのさえずりを楽しみました。最初にフクロウが鳴いた後に先頭を切ってクロツグミが4:28に鳴き、メジロやガビチョウの声に混じって、エゾムシクイやセンダイムシクイ、コマドリ、オオルリ、イカル、アオバト、キジ、アオゲラ、コジュケイなどが鳴きました。

I went out before sunrise on 20 April to try to watch a Jungle Nightjar again in the forest near my house, because of having observed at sunset of 19 April. I did not see the target bird as a result unfortunately, but I perfectly enjoyed the spring birds as they started chirping at dawn.

5:02が日の出だったこの日、5:50過ぎに森にも陽の光が入り、コサメビタキやビンズイ、カケス、ツグミ、アカハラ、シロハラなどの姿を見ることができました。

I was particularly excited when I heard songs of Japanese Robin, some reef warblers and Japanese Green Pigeon in the forest and Ruddy-breasted Crake in the reed by the small pond. I had a great time in the morning.

I also visited the cherry blossom trees along the wetland after sunrise, enjoyed watching a flock of Red-cheeked Myna!

Japanese Night Heron 遅いお花見

I went to a mountain about altitude 800m to celebrate the late cherry blossoms on April 14th. On this day, I heard songs of Oriental Cuckoo and Eastern Crowned Willow Warblers for the first time in 2024, and there were some Eurasian Bullfinches in the flock of Japanese Grosbeak, probably Eurasian Bullfinch would be the last time for me 2024 spring.

2024年春は桜の開花後に寒さが続いたので、4月中旬でも山ならばまだ楽しめるのではないかと車で適当な場所を目指したところ、標高800m付近では、まだ咲き始めの桜もあるほどでした。ツツドリとセンダイムシクイを声も聞こえ、冬鳥のウソの姿もまだありました。季節の変わり目らしい、楽しい体験でした。

After sunset, surprisingly I could hear the voice of the Japanese Night Heron from 18:45 to 18:53 on this day. It was the changing of the season, when the numbers of winter birds decrease and the first sightings of summer birds increase.

ヒヨドリ Brown-eared Bulbul Migration

4月10-11日に自宅で作業をしていると、上空を午前中にヒヨドリが北東方向へ渡っていきました。以下、時間毎の確認数です。

Some flocks of Brown-eared Bulbul crossed to the east in the morning from 10th to 11th in April in the clear skies, while I was working at home. As there was heavy rain all day on the 9th, it was possible that more birds were migrating on the 10th.

アホウドリ Short-tailed Albatross

東京ー八丈航路でアホウドリが見られることをJさんから2019年に教わり、感激の出会いがありました。2023年春には乗船した際にはザトウクジラも観察できた話を東京に引っ越してきた鳥仲間にしたところ、大変興味を持ったので2024年4月の乗船にお誘いしました。

2023年にJさんにご案内を頂いたときのようにアホウドリの個体数が多くはなかったのですが、同行のJさん、Kさん、Aさんの普段の良い行いのおかげで、船のそばを通過する成鳥に会えました。

I could not see any humpback whales this time. It seems that the best time of humpbacks is in March. Also the high season for albatross seemed to have passed, but we were lucky to see one passing by the ship, and the seabird watchers were very excited by perfect watching and photos.

島では、渡りの途中の鳥の姿も見られました。今回の旅でもスワロフスキーのATCを持って行きましたが、スコープで見た渡り途中の鳥たちの表情に４人で感激をしました。やはり双眼鏡だけでは認識しにくいものがありますし、「全員が観た！」という実感が得られるスコープの存在は大きかったです。

鯨類は東京湾に入ってからはハナゴンドウが見られました。残念ながらザトウクジラには会えませんでしたが、Jさんのおかげで航路と島の生き物観察の楽しさを友人2名は感じてくれたようですので本当に良かったです。

今回もJさんにお時間を作っていただき、また、現地ではSさんとNさんに大変お世話になりました。心から御礼を申し上げます。

Middendorf's Bean Goose オオヒシクイ

A Middendorf's Bean Goose, Anser fabalis middendorffii, appeared on 15/Nov/2023 in Kanagawa where an irregular wintering location, and flew away exactly 4 months later on 14/Mar/2024. Although it is difficult to recognize in the photos, I had the impression that the bird was a little thin for the bird the time just arrived, however I found gradually accumulated fat during its stay.

I am looking forward to seeing the bird again here!

2023年11月15日に飛来したオオヒシクイは2024年3月14日に姿を消したとのことでした。無事に仲間と合流できていることを祈りばかりです。

足環付ユリカモメ Ringed Gulls

2024年3月19日、青に白字で刻印されたプラスチックリングを装着したユリカモメを2個体見つけました。無事に番号が読めたので、標識者に報告を致しました。

2023-24シーズンの観察記録は、私の2024/3/19の記録が初で、保護放鳥後、9年も経過しての観察記録でした。標識時に成鳥であったため、10年以上生きていることは確実です。釣り糸が絡んでひょっとしたら生存が難しかったかもしれない個体が放鳥後も確実に生き続けていることが確認できることは、標識されていたからこそです。

3月の確認種 Bird Species in Mar.

その年に見聞した鳥の記録を、文一総合出版発行の野鳥雑誌BIRDER1月号付録の手帳にある日本産鳥類目録で管理しています。3月31日の種数チェックでは134種でした。2月が116種でしたので、18種増えたことになります。

My bird year list had 134 species in the 31 March. It means an increase of 18 species from the end of February.

Swarovski ATC Review and Field Test Vol.4/4

Swarovski ATC, ATS, BTXのレンズのそれぞれの明るさをチェックしました。

以上の条件で、日没時間前後に約20m先の逆光のタシギの群れを観察しました。BTXが単焦点30倍ですので、ATCとATSもズーム倍率を30倍にして、タシギの腹部の縞模様が私の目で認識できた最後の時間を記録しました。

I compared the brightness of the lens of the 3 models, Swarovski ATC, ATS and BTX at 30 magnification, around sunset time (16:44) by observing about backlit Common Snipes on 06/January/2024, no wind and fine weather.

I recorded the final time that I could see some stripes on its bellies of snipe near closed wings.

ATCでは17:12まで、

ATSでは17:17まで、

BTXでは17:25まで、

タシギの模様が認識できました。

I could observe the tiny pattern of the snipe about 20m away,

until 17:12 for ATC,

until 17:17 for ATS,

until 17:25 for BTX.

ATCは対物レンズ56mmでズームという3機種の中では一番厳しい条件と思われましたが、日没後の約30分近くまで観察できたこと、そしてATS 80mm とATCの差がたったの5分であったことに驚きました。

ATC is a really satisfactory performance for me to watching bird behavior, to be able to "still see" of their active movements in the light conditions becoming increasingly hard and severe.

BTXの対物レンズは単眼65mmで接眼部分において光が2分割されるので、ATSよりも不利だと思われましたが、BTXが一番最後まで見えたのは、単焦点でかつ双眼で目の負担が少なかったからかもしれません。個人的に大変興味深い結果となりました。

It seemed that it is disadvantage compared to ATS, as BTX has a monocular 65mm objective lens and the light is divided into bisection for the eyepiece lens. However BTX wins because it was mono-focal and there was less strain on the eyes, my prediction. The results were interesting for me.

最終的には、ほぼ真っ暗といっていい日没後45分（17:30頃）まで、ATCでタシギの姿自体は見えましたし、その群れに途中でイカルチドリが加わったのも、動きとシルエットの違いで認識できました。検証の切り上げのタイミングは、正直に言うと「帰宅時間になったから」でした。光の条件が加速度的に厳しくなる日没時間に、軽量なATCでタシギの活動が活発になっていく様子が「観えた」のは、生態観察が好きな方々にとっては本当に嬉しい性能だと思います。

Although identified by movement, size and silhouette (not by colour), I could see snipes at ATC until 45 minutes after sunset (around 17:30), and also see that some Long-billed Plovers had joined the snipe's flock,

At 17:30 it was almost completely dark. The end of birdwatching has to be decided by myself, not because the brightness of the optical equipment is unusable!

Vol.2/4でも書きましたが、今回の3機種を同時使用してみて、改めてそれぞれに明確な長所に気づくことができました。Swarovski オプティックは、それぞれの機種のコンセプトをしっかり定めて開発をしているのでしょう。

Swarovski ATC Review and Field Test Vol.3/4

スコープの形状があまりにも違うので適切ではないと思いつつも、BTX 65mm （以下BTX）と ATC（以下ATC）の比較した印象をお伝えします。

I compared between Swarovski BTX 65mm and ATC, although it may not be appropriate as the shapes are different.

BTXは、下の画像をご覧いただくとおわかりのように双眼型の望遠鏡です。重さは2195gで、ATCと約1.2kgもの差があります。ATCだと三脚も軽くできるので、総重量の軽量化への貢献はATCに文句なしで軍配が上がります。

BTX is a "bino-scope"

ATC is a very compact and extremely light weight monocular type telescope, BTX is bigger and heavier. However, the mechanism provides fantastic three-dimension view and vivid bird behavior. It describes that birds are “living creatures”. I enjoyed watching all bird for as long as I want, no matter how long time.

ATCはコンパクトで非常によく見える単眼望遠鏡です。一方、BTXは双眼であるために視界に入った野鳥がATCに比べて格段に立体的に見えます。以下の写真では2次元になってしまってうまく表現できないのですが、セイタカシギをBTXで観察すると、白い腹部の影が作り出す “体の丸み” が手に取るようにわかります。

BTXは観察している鳥が「3次元の生命体」だと伝わってきて、とてもワクワクしてくるのです。両目での観察は目の負担が少ないので、同個体を追い続けたり、長時間にわたって鳥を探し続けることが好きな方は、まずはBTXの検討をして、三脚を含めた重さと価格から購入を判断すると良いと思います。

ATC is a very compact & light weight scope and makes a room in my bag, it helps to take one more sweets than before! Also 17-40x zoom eye piece gives me nice birding time if I enjoy birds in various natural environments in the single day, or walk long distances especially in hilly areas and mountains.

BTXは単焦点であるのに対し、ATCには17-40倍ズームが搭載です。坂の多い環境や長距離を歩くバードウォッチングでも遠方の野鳥もしっかりと観察をしたいならば、1kg未満のATCが良いでしょう。私は現在はATCをVelbon ULTREK 45L（販売終了品）に載せており、非常にコンパクト＆軽量で遠出のバードウォッチングに適したコンビネーションだと思っています。

次回は、ATC、ATS、BTXのそれぞれのレンズの明るさの違いを紹介します。

The BTX 65mm has a single focus magnification 30x. It was interesting to note that when I looked at the same bird in ATC as in BTX and adjust the magnification so that it is the same size, the magnification of ATC was similar to 35x.

In the next, the brightness of the ATC, ATS and BTX lenses will be examined.

Swarovski ATC Review and Field Test Vol.2/4

Swarovski ATC（以下ATC）と初代 ATS-HD 80mm（以下ATS）、BTX 65mm（以下BTX）を比べてみました。

まず、今回はATSとの比較を紹介します。

I did a field test of the Swarovski ATC, comparing it to the first generation of my Swarovski ATS-HD 80 with 20-60x zoom eyepiece. The magnification, ATC has scale number 17, 25, 35, 40, and the 20-60x eyepiece for ATS has 20, 30, 40, 60. So I checked same magnification settings, 40x. I compared the telescopes by looking at a Great Egret on the branch of tree in the park.

ATSには、今は販売終了している20-60xのズームアイピースを装着させてあります（現行ズームアイピースは20-50x）。各倍率目盛りが、ATCは17, 25, 35, 40、

ATS用ズームアイピースは20, 30, 40, 60なので、確実な同目盛設定ができる40xで、公園の池の枝に佇むダイサギ（下画面矢印）を見比べました。

接眼レンズ直径がATCは30mmで、初代 ATS用ズームアイピースは24mmであるせいか、同倍率ではATCのほうが視界は広く見えました。ATCも解像度とコントラストに一切の不満はないのですが、ATSではダイサギの足指の鱗の枚数をしっかり数えることができましたので、解像度はやはりATS80mmが高いのでしょう。

The eyepiece diameter of the ATC is 30mm, and the first generation ATS zoom eyepiece is 24mm. So the ATC has a wider field of view at the same magnification. ATS wins in this case the resolution and contrast because of bigger objective lens, I could accurately count the number of scales on the great egret's toes.

ATCは970gと持ち運びの良さは抜群で、一周3km以上の広い水辺を一周した際には非常に体が楽でした。今回は近場でしたが、現地の歩く距離や往復の運転距離が長い場合はATCを選ぶ機会が増えそうです。

ATC is extremely portable and much lighter than the ATS (in addition, ATS needs a heavier tripod to be stable good view!), also convenient when walking more than 3km around a large pond with my scope on a tripod, for example. Since I was less tired on the day for the ATC Field Test, I was able to spend more time observing 2 wintering Long-billed Dowitchers.

ATS用の三脚はATCのものより重くなりますので、なおさらです。疲れが少ない分だけ、観察時間を長くすることも帰り道の安全確保もできることでしょう。山道などでもATCの軽さが光るのは間違いないです。

I am happy to have ATS and ATC both now because I can know both good points by field test on the same day and under the same conditions. It is clear that Swarovski Optik has developed each model based on a well-defined concept.

ATSとATCを同日同条件で使ってみて、それぞれの長所を感じました。Swarovski は、それぞれの機種のコンセプトをしっかり決めて開発をしていることが、よくわかりました。

次回はBTXとATCの比較をします。

Swarovski ATC Review and Field Test Vol.1/4

スワロフスキーの小型スコープ ATCを、入手3日後に早速フィールドで使用しました。とにかく小さくて軽く、それでいて使いやすいです。

I have started to use my Swarovski Spotting Scope ATC in the field.

When I carried the ATC on a tripod for the first time, it was so light compared to my swarovski ATS 80mm that I thought I had forgotten to attach it. It seems like a joke, but it's true.

これまで1.6kg程の80mmスコープを使っているので、三脚に装着して担いだ時、全く違う重量バランスに

「あれ、スコープはついてるよね？」

と思ったくらいの軽さです。

対物レンズキャップを接眼レンズキャップ内側に収納できるようにしているのは、世界中に私のような「無くし屋」のバードウォッチャーが多くいるということでしょうか？

The objective lens cap can be stored inside the eyepiece cap.

接眼レンズの直径はヒヨ吉計測で30mm。視界の広さを感じます。

The diameter of the eyepiece lens is 30mm. How wide view, easy catching and wonderful watching!

フォーカスリングは下画像のように手の位置にあり、

ATC lens 17 - 40 magnification has perfect sharpness and brightness for me.

17倍から40倍のズームリングは接眼レンズ側にあります。実際に野鳥を観察してみて、ATCの望遠端を40倍と設計したことに、私は大いに納得。

My eyes didn't get any tired after long-watching because of mild hue in all ranges. It will ensure safely car driving to get home.

25/Dec/2024 Japanese Bush Warbler

明るさや鮮明さは、さすがスワロフスキーです。地鳴きもせずに藪の中の動いていた真冬のウグイスもすぐに識別できました。良い道具は「観察で識別する」ことを大切にしていきたいという気持ちにさせてくれます。

More and more people are taking and using photographic images to identify birds, but I like to identify birds by observing them. The photo above a Japanese Bush Warbler was taken after confirmed by ATC watching.

この時は野外での使い初めということもあり、現時点では上空を飛んでいる鳥をATCで捉えるのは私にはまだ難しかったです。購入してすぐに飛翔中の鳥の観察にも使いたい方は、直視型のSTCをお勧めします。

20年前、初めてスワロフスキーの光学機器を使った時も思ったのですが、とにかく観察が楽しくなります。世界中のバードウォッチャーが愛用するのも納得です。

Swarovski Spotting Scope ATC

海外の野鳥雑誌で紹介されて最初に知り、日本発売開始時（2022年12月）からずーっと気になっていたスワロフスキーATCを入手しました。

I always wish to go birding with my favorite optics. However it had been difficult to reduce the total weight of my luggage, especially tripods and telescopes on a plane. But now, I no longer have to worry about it！ I have got the smart scope Swarovski ATC, it will be one of my best scope for long distance travel birdwatching, 970g, length 258cm!

I will introduce the usability of the spotting scope ATC in the field, in my blog.

決断のきっかけは、2023年秋のタカ渡り観察でした。

公共交通機関で長距離移動する鳥見旅では、重量や荷量の関係から私は80mm ATSと三脚を持って行くことを機会で諦め、双眼鏡のみを持っていくことがほとんどでした。離島や遠方の訪問でも「スコープを持って来ていれば…」という出会いがありましたが、飛行機を利用する移動では、普段以上に光学機器と三脚への心配が尽きません。そこで機内持込バッグに入るコンパクトサイズで画質で満足のいくスコープに興味を持ち始めました。機材の大幅な軽量化を考えたことも大きな後押しとなりました。
