動物写真家 秋山知伸さんが引率する、2018年より始まったボランティア ツアーに参加しました。今回で6回目の開催（コロナ期間中は一時中断）で、ユキヒョウやオオカミなどの肉食獣の襲撃から地元の方の家畜を守る頑丈な小屋作りをすることが訪問目的です。小屋を作成する場所は毎年変わるため、同じラダック地方でありながら、毎回新鮮な気持ちで訪問しています。
I participated in a volunteer tour led by wildlife photographer Tomonobu Akiyama from August 6th to 20th. The purpose of this trip is to build enclosures to protect local livestock from predators, like snow leopards and wolves.

The location where we carried out our activities this time was a place where electricity had reached the entire village only a few years ago, and the highway connecting to the village had just been completed this year.
荘厳な風景の中にある我々のベースキャンプ
Our campsite was set at high altitude, roughly 4,000 meters. While local staff seemed to have mobile service, there was no Wi-Fi available for our smart phones.
標高3,500mほどのレー（Leh）で2泊し、5,000mの峠などにも立ち寄って高地順応してから村に入りました。キャンプ地の標高は約4,000m。周囲は地球規模の地殻変動の力を感じる美しい山々が見守る、素晴らしいロケーションでした。現地スタッフの携帯電話は通じていたようですが、Wi-Fiはありませんでした。
老若男女、当日の作業の中から自分のできることをそれぞれ見つけて作業を進めていきます。空気の薄い高地での活動にもかかわらず、土に水を加えて泥を作って運ぶという重労働にも積極的に取り組んでくれた若者たちに感謝です。
Everyone pitched in by finding tasks they could do. Despite working at such high altitudes with thin air, the young members took on heavy work such as mixing soil and water to make mud. I am deeply grateful for their hard work.
事前に地元の方が準備してくださっていた土レンガを手押し車で現場へ運搬する作業を、私もトライしたのですが、自分の体力の限界を感じて、すぐに若者に代わってもらいました。
手押し車で小屋のそばまで運んだそのレンガを積み上げポイントまでリレー方式で運び、
地元の方の指導を受けながら、一段ずつ積み上げていきます。
積み上がるにつれて高くなる塀の上での重いレンガや泥の桶を受け取る作業は、空気の薄い現地では日本人だと足元がふらつくこともあって危険なので、地元の方々にお任せしました。
塀が完成したら、天井部分を金網で覆います。この網のワイヤーが太く、見た目よりも非常に重い！

家畜が入ったのを確認したら、無事に完成です！

今回もユキヒョウには会えませんでしたが、真新しい足跡を見ることができました。少しずつ「本体」へ近づいているので、次回は会えることを期待しています。
Although I didn't get to see any snow leopard this time either, we spotted freshly left tracks. As I am getting closer and closer to seeing the real thing, I remain hopeful that I will finally encounter next time, or later.

My efforts may still fall far short of what the people of Ladakh truly need, but I want to keep going in the belief that even someone like me can serve as a small ambassador of goodwill. Each trip is also a special time for me great learning experience, as I get to hear precious insights about the rapidly changing environment of Ladakh, according to Dr. Tsewang Namgail and Mr.Jigmet Dadul. One of the highlight of this tour is the opportunity to hear commentary directly from these two guys each time. It is wonderful for youngers to have this opportunity.
毎回、私は数日は高山病（主に頭痛）に悩まされており、回数を重ねていても慣れないことが多いです。しかし、私自身5回目の参加ということもあり、現地に到着した際に、どこか自分の中で「ただいま」と思える感覚になってきたのがとても嬉しいです。
ラダックの人々にとって、私の努力は全く足りていないのですが、こんな私でも「小さな親善大使になれている」と信じて続けていけたらと思っています。毎回、環境が大きく変わりつつあるラダックの貴重なお話を聞くこともでき、大変勉強になっています。回を重ねるごとに体力の衰えを感じていますが、来年も参加できるように健康をしっかり維持したいと思います。
最後になりますが、このボランティアツアーの開催に理解を示してくださる旅行会社の皆さん、ツアーの企画と引率をしてくださる秋山知伸さん、楽しいお話を聞かせてくださった8名の参加者の皆さん、そしていつも細やかな対応をしてくださる現地スタッフの一人一人に心から御礼を申し上げます。
