ヘビを捕らえたノスリ

草原の上空を何かぶら下げて飛んでいるノスリを見つけたので、双眼鏡で確認したら、なんと立派なヘビでした。

Blue-and-white Flycatcher オオルリ

Blue-and-white Flycatcher males are mostly observed from angles that make it difficult to see the distinctive blue upper surface, as they often sing at the tops of tall trees in their breeding site.

繁殖地では高木の頂でさえずることが多いので、オオルリの雄の特徴である上面の青が見えにくいアングルからの観察がほとんどです。

7月の確認種 Bird Species in July

その年に見聞した鳥の記録を文一総合出版発行の野鳥雑誌BIRDER1月号付録の手帳にある日本産鳥類目録で管理しています。7月31日に行なった種数チェックでは、219種でした。

My year list of bird 2024 had 219 species on 31 July, added 1 species after the end of June from 218. This 1 species is a flying Grey-headed Lapwing when I was on the highway in Yamanashi.

コマドリ Japanese Robin in Kami-kochi

2024年は展示取材のために長野県上高地へ複数回の訪問をして、初夏はコマドリを重点的に探しました。実際に見られたのは片手で数えられる程度でしたが、これくらいが本来の “コマドリらしい出会い” だと信じている一人です。

Kamikochi is one of the perfect forest for birdwatching, especially Japanese Robin!

Bears often appear recently in Kamikochi, so I recommend asking reception at the visitor cetre or the information centre before enjoying your walk for your safety.

ウミネコ The Colony of Black-tailed Gull

コロナ前は2016年6月、2017年1月、2018年6月と3年連続で行っていた青森県蕪島を久しぶりに訪問しました。今回も感動的な鳥との出会いがある旅のプランを練ってくださったNさん、Kさんご夫妻に心から御礼を申し上げます。

I went to Kabu-shima Island, one of the most famous colony of the Black-tailed Gull in Aomori pref. Although it was very smelly, the seabird breeding site is one of the most interesting places for me.

The gull chicks were just starting to grow when I visited in early June. Some of the grown chicks would walk out of the nest, and in areas close to the neighboring brood, fights would break out over the protection of their own chicks.

今回Kさんが捕獲したカエル（観察後リリース）、私は当初ムカシツチガエルと思ったのですが、後日確認すると観察した地域と分布が異なっており、ツチガエルのようでした。生体では見た目にはほぼ見分けができないようですが、次回以降の東北訪問で詳しく観察し、できれば幼体の見分けポイントを見てみたいです。

2024 カッコウ初認

2024年は、自宅でのカッコウの初認が6月19日でした。近隣で鳥をご覧になっている方々の情報では5月下旬から6月上旬には既に声が聞かれていたそうですが、私の自宅周辺の地域で確認したのは19日となり、今年は例年より初認が遅くなりました。

例年は初認後も声が聞かれることが多いのですが、2024年は初認時の1回のみでした。実家ではカッコウの声を聞くことはなかったので、2018年から7年連続で家にいながら声を聞かれる喜びを感じています。

その年に見聞した野鳥の記録を文一総合出版発行の野鳥雑誌BIRDER1月号付録の手帳にある日本産鳥類目録で管理しています。6月30日現在の種数チェックでは218種でした。

My year list of bird 2024 had 218 species on 30 June, added 11 species after the end of May from 207. In June, I was happy to see many grassland birds such as Eurasian Bittern, Japanese Swamp Warblar, Japanese Reed Bunting and Japanese Quail in a wetland, also Whiskered Tern and Cattle Egret in my patch.

I tried to count barn swallows going to roost in the evening. However, it was some difficulty to do just alone!

ライチョウ Rocks on the Rock

夏羽のライチョウに会うために、高山帯へ行ってきました。入山前日は大雨でしたが、山に入ってから滞在期間中は素晴らしい天気に恵まれ、ライチョウの興味深い行動や高山帯の野鳥たちを堪能しました。きめ細やかな旅のアレンジしてくださったIshrさん、同行してくださったmatsuさんとtrswさん、本当にありがとうございました。

The Rock Ptarmigan in Japan Lagopus muta japonica is revered as a sacred bird and is not targeted for hunting like other countries. For this reason, they are not very afraid of people. There is a wonderful relationship between Japanese people and nature that has been kept over a long time. I went to alpine zone to watch Rock Ptarmigans in late May, and could met some males what were on the rocks for keeping his own territory.

Some birds were already paired.

We also found some males on the way up mountains about 3000m ALT. 

前回の訪問時は、自身の体力の心配から頂上登山時には双眼鏡なしで目指しましたが、今回は軽量双眼鏡を持参しました。ライチョウ以外にも、イワヒバリやカヤクグリを双眼鏡で見られてよかったです。

コアジサシ More Turns, please!

河原の中州にコアジサシが座っていました。個体数が非常に少ない場所ですが、繁殖がうまくいくことを切に願っています。

I went to a nesting site of little terns in late May. Only 3 individuals were seen sitting probably with eggs, and arriving additional flocks will be very important to breeding success this season.

鳥類生息状況調査 The 5th Bird Survey

とある市で10年おきに行われている鳥類生息状況調査に初参加しました。今回は5回目の調査で、つまり半世紀の記録が蓄積されることになります。

It was the first time for me to participate in a city bird survey which is conducted every ten years.  This is 5th survey, it means that bird records have been accumulated half a century.

26/May/2024 The time of Sunrise

私は、ごくわずかですが、市街地区域の調査を担当しました。

The survey designed that it divided 500m squares within the city for recording all bird species and numbers on each route, also had to start the time of sunrise and finish before 10am. I kept some days for the research as I had several routes. I could not finish in one day. Although it was a very hard investigation for me, I was honored to be able to join it.

行政の厳しい財政の中で予算確保なども大変だと思いますし、調査員の皆さんの科学的データの蓄積の重要性に対する意識の高さとボランティア精神にも頭が下がる想いです。

It will be more and more difficult to keep budgets because of the government's tight financial situation. However this is the inestimable value records as it shows common bird's changes over 50 years, which is very meaningful. 

I really wish that the survey will continue for the next 50 years (100 years in total!). 

普段は調査対象になりにくい、ごく普通の鳥たちの50年間の変化がわかるこの記録は大変意味深いものになると感じています。これからの50年（計100年！）は調査が継続されることを切に願っています。

ワカケホンセイインコ

私の調査地でも見かける頻度が増えてきました。大きな体と強力な嘴、群れになる性質は、樹洞を使う日本の在来鳥類たちにとって良い影響があるとは思えないので、今後の動向が気になります。

2023年末の話なのですが、運転中にふと鳥の気配がしたので、見てみるとトラックの後部荷室ドアになんとキンクロハジロが泳いでいました！

いつもの渋滞ポイントでいつも通り渋滞になり、停車中に撮影しました。追い越しの際に側面にもキンクロハジロが泳いでおり、「フジクロくん」と名前がありました。帰宅後に検索をかけてみましたが、フジ技研のキャラクターでFUJI Transportsさんとは、関連がありそうな気もしつつ、ネット上にはビンゴ情報がありませんでした。

カルガモをキャラクターにしている企業や引越し屋は知っていますが、このキンクロハジロのように忠実ではないですので、この運送会社には、きっとバードウォッチャーがいるのでは？と予想中。

5月の確認種 Bird Species in May

その年に見聞した鳥の記録を文一総合出版発行の野鳥雑誌BIRDER1月号付録の手帳にある日本産鳥類目録で管理しています。5月31日に行なった種数チェックでは207種でした。

My year list of bird 2024 had 207 species on 31 May, added 40 species after the end of April from 167. Visiting Tobi-shima Island to enjoy many migratory birds was a factor in this increase, also going to alpine zones above 2,700m altitude to watch ptarmigans, and the new arrivals summer birds in my patch.

ムギマキ Mugimaki Flycatcher

海岸林を探索していたら、幸運にもムギマキを見つけることができました。

I had an opportunity to enjoy watching migratory birds again this spring in the coastal forests, after Tobi-shima visiting. Although I almost didn't expect to meet rare birds, I surprisingly encountered a male Mugimaki Flycatcher on 10 May in the small forest for the first time during the last decade at the place.

I could watch other migrating birds, Crossbills, Siberian Blue Robin, Eyebrowed Thrushes, Hawfinch, Siberian Rubythroat, Dusky Warbler, and Japanese Leaf Warblers this was my first time this summer, for example.

松田道生さんが以前教えてくださった探鳥術を実践すると、そのほかにもたくさんの鳥たちを観察できました。本当にごく小さい林でしたが、彼らにとっては重要な場所です。

 I also made a short birding in another place. It was very hard one day trip by car, but a good one as also I had a fun looking for bat by using detector.

様々な鳥に出会えて気分が良くなり、帰りに少し寄り道もしたところ、アオジやアカハラ、夕暮れのマミジロのさえずりなどを楽しむことができました。

久しぶりの遠方日帰り弾丸バードウォッチングで、飛島とはまた一味違った雰囲気の楽しい旅でした。万歩計を見ると、24,785歩でした。飛島では1日3万歩を超えている日（4万近い日も！）もあったので、いかに飛島で歩き回っていたかがわかりました。
