The Little Spotted Kiwi was rediscovered on the main island of New Zealand for the first time in 50 years, and that a new species of warbler inhabiting the Tokara Islands in Japan was recognized.

The Tokara leaf warbler, previously considered to be the Iijima's leaf warbler that inhabits the Tokara Islands, has now been recognized as a separate species. It is believed that the Iijima's leaf warbler and the Tokara leaf warbler, diverged between 2.8 million and 3.2 million years ago.

トカラムシクイはこれまでトカラに生息するイイジマムシクイとされていたものが独立種として認められたもので、日本で新種が認められたのは、1981年に沖縄本島におけるヤンバルクイナ以来45年ぶりで、大発見です。

トカラ列島のイイジマムシクイがトカラムシクイに
イイジマムシクイとトカラムシクイは280万～320万年前に分岐していたそうです。見た目は似ていても、DNA解析をすることで日本列島やトカラ列島の生物相をより詳細に知ることができるようになったこと、そしてその解明のために日々尽力している学者の皆さんに心の底から敬意を表したいと思います。日本産鳥類は本種の発見で自然分布は2026年3月現在で645種となりました。
