Raptor Migration 2023 report Vol.1

2023年の秋は3カ所の猛禽類の渡りの観察へ行きました。最初の訪問地は私にとって初めてのタカ渡り観察スポット。少し早い時期でしたが、日を重ねるにつれて個体数が増えていく様子が、個人的にはとても興味深かったです。次回はもう少し長い滞在ができるように調整したいと思います。

I went to 3 places to enjoy watching raptor migration in September and October in 2023. At each location, I could watch a lot of birds.  

My first visiting place in 2023 was Tsushima in Nagasaki Pref.

The Uchiyama Pass is the first transit point in Japan for Chinese Sparrowhawks from the South Korea. The members of the Tsushima Wild Bird Society are dedicated surveyors, so detailed records are available, update everyday on the website of Hawk Migration Network, while the hawks are migrating.

Chinese Sparrowhawks

Early September was the period when the number of flying hawks gradually increases, it means a good time to feel for the beginning of the Chinese Sparrowhawk migration. If you are lucky, will encounter several huge flocks of more than 1,000.

One last important thing to mention, as September is typhoon season in Japan, I really advise all birdwatchers, especially a person who from abroad, to have more days or flexible plan in their schedules to visit Tsushima.
