My 2026 raptor migration observations began on September 13th. The five days of observation, the number of migrating Chinese Sparrowhawks gradually declined after an initial count of around 9,000 on the first day. It was a delightful time not only meeting local birdwatchers again, but also enjoying conversations with my friends who had moved to the islands.

I had several other enjoyable experiences, such as a Japanese Wood Pigeon flying nearby on the 16th, spotting a Ruddy Kingfisher early in the morning on the 17th, and seeing flocks of Yellow Wagtails later in the period—even though none were seen on the first day.

16/Sep/2026 Red-rumped Swallow
17/Sep/2026 Barn Swallow
15/Sep/2026 Himalayan Cuckoo
17/Sep/2026 Yellow Wagtail
17/Sep/2026 Mallard and Spot-billed Duck
Talking with the many people I met at the observation spot was another highlight of the day. I met a student from Tokyo who aims to observe all subspecies of the Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker in Japan and dreams of studying the Great Argus in graduate school. I’d be delighted to help her in any way I can in the future. I also enjoyed chatting with a student from Yamanashi Prefecture and his friend, an international student from India. I was truly inspired by the fascinating stories shared by these ambitious young people.
