Fairy Pitta Dreams ヤイロチョウ

Early this summer, I visited my friend's house and wandered through a forest where the calls of the Fairy Pitta had been recorded a few years back.

"Does this look like a good environment for Pitta?"

"Is this forest truly an attractive spot?"

It was such a delightful time, walking through the early summer woodland from 4 am while discussing these questions. Along the way, we enjoyed listening to the beautiful songs of Japanese Paradise Flycatchers and Ruddy Kingfishers.

As we walked, watching my friend chat so warmly and naturally with the local people instantly reminded me of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) raptor project staff I once met in the UK. He shared that very same dedicated, community-rooted passion for wildlife.

Our main question remains whether the Fairy Pittas here were merely passing through during migration, or if they have actually settled in this forest to breed.

My friend is committed to understanding the Fairy Pittas in this area, and I truly want to support his passion. While I sometimes wonder how much help I can really be to someone with such rich field experience, I am determined to adjust my schedule from now on so that I work with him toward securing reliable records.

友人宅周辺でヤイロチョウの鳴き声が記録された場所を歩きました。今回は会えませんでしたが、この地域への自然環境の理解を深めようとしている友人の熱意に、私も協力できるように今からしっかりとスケジュールを調整して、確実な記録に向けて準備をしていきたいと思っています。

ササゴイのコロニー Striated Heron

今年の初夏の話で恐縮ですが、ササゴイの営巣場所に1年ぶりに訪問した際、営巣地がやや移動していました。ひっそりと繁殖するサギ類のコロニーは、少しでも移動すると発見が難しくなりますね。

I visited the nesting site of the Striated Heron for the first time in 2026 and found that it had moved slightly from its previous location. It is difficult for me to rediscover them, since they form small and single-species colonies, .

ササゴイのコロニーは、他のサギ類のコロニーに比べると小規模なこともあり、地域の方に見守っていただけている場所が多いようです。全国的に減少しているササゴイですので、コロニーを温かく迎えていただけるのは本当にありがたいことです。コロニーのある地域の方々へ心から御礼申し上げます。

Also, I was very happy to reconfirm one more nesting site on June 13th in an area where there had been no reliable nesting records since 2019, and 5 chicks in the nest on June 27th, 2026. Based on a detailed local city bird atlas, the colony of Striated Herons I found there appeared to be the first confirmed sighting in about 50 years!

The Swallows ツバメ

Using my thermal scope this summer made it surprisingly easy to find swallow roosts and spot which reed beds had the highest concentration.

2026年に観察したツバメのねぐらは、集まっている個体数が例年に比べて多い印象を受けました。

長野県上高地インフォメーションセンター2Fにて、木彫りの野鳥「バードカービング」の世界で活躍する鈴木勉さんご本人とその教室の受講生の皆さんの作品とともに、「コマドリとその仲間たち」という展示会を開催します。

In a Forest at 1,500 Metres

There was barely any bird activity on the evening I arrived at the forest at an altitude of 1,500 metres, but the next morning I saw so many of them. While it was before sunrise, I heard a Nightjar and a Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo in the distance. Just hearing their voices was so exciting.

日没バードウォッチング Bonus Birds

I went a place around sunset to check a potential swallow roost, but swallows weren't using the site.

以前訪問した際にツバメがねぐらとして利用しているかもしれないと予測した場所へ、日没の時間に訪問してみました。予想に反して残念ながらツバメの利用はありませんでしたが、地域の野生生物の生息状況を知るための探索を続けていきたいと思います。

However, I had a wonderful surprise: encountering at least 3 Ruddy-breasted Crakes, a Common Cuckoo, and a Brown Boobook! I didn't get a chance to see these birds in my patch last summer. It made me realize that I still have a lot to learn about local bird habitats.

ヒヨドリ Brown-eared Bulbul

約1年ぶりに訪問した森は、一部の範囲で木が切られていました。様子がやや変わったその森で、いつもと同様にヒヨドリに会うことができました。

7月の確認種 My Bird List in July

毎年、見聞した鳥を日本産鳥類目録（第8版）に基づいて記録しています。7月31日の種数チェックでは1月からの累計で221種（外来種5種コブハクチョウ、ガビチョウ、コジュケイ、ホンセイインコ、ドバトを含む）となりました。

I update my annual checklist of Japanese birds following the Check-List of Japanese Birds, 8th Revised Edition. By the end of July, I’ve reached 221 species (including 5 non-native species). The only addition this month was the Whiskered Tern at Isanuma.

シマアジ Garganey

今春、地元では出会う機会を逃した繁殖羽のシマアジの雄を、一人で探索した北の大地で観察することができました。

It was the first time I'd ever noticed a pair of garganey in May, hidden in the bushes, revealed only by his mysterious call.

アカハラ　Brown-headed Thrush

Yさんのご案内で早朝に訪問した林の入口で、ちょっと変わった声のアカハラが元気にさえずっていました。

Early in the morning, a Brown-headed Thrush was singing cheerfully. It had a rather unusual voice at the entrance to the forest.

6月の確認種 My Bird List in June

毎年、見聞した鳥を日本産鳥類目録（第8版）に基づいて記録しています。6月30日の種数チェックでは1月からの累計で220種（外来種5種コブハクチョウ、ガビチョウ、コジュケイ、ホンセイインコ、ドバトを含む）となりました。

I updated my year list of Japanese birds annually, following the Check-List of Japanese Birds, 8th Revised Edition. By the end of June, I've reached 220 species (including 5 non-natives).

神奈川県大磯へアオバトの観察に訪れた際、その場にいたのは私を含めて最大で4名でした。その4名全員が壁に寄り添うような位置で待機していたためか、近い岩場への飛来が頻繁に見られました。アオバトの気持ちになって、飛来を待つ位置を少し考えれば、より近くで観察できるのだと身をもって実感しました。

Every year, I check the number of Yellow Bitterns in my local patch. Since 2020, I have confirmed a maximum of 8 birds (4 pairs). However, so far in 2026, the most I’ve seen at one time is only 2.

ヤブサメとセンダイムシクイ Cryptic Birds

初めて訪問した森で、ヤブサメの声があちこちから聞こえたので、声を頼りに目を凝らして探すと、幸運にも見つけることができました。いつになくじっくりと観察する機会にも恵まれ、野外で初めて色を確認ができた部位がありました。図鑑で見るよりも色が淡く見え、今後の作画にとても役立つ知識となりました。

Thanks to being able to observe Asian Stubtail and Eastern Crowned Warbler, these Cryptic Birds more closely than usual, I could watch detail some parts of their bodies in the wild that I had known about from field guides. It was a delightful encounter during my first visit to the forest.

キアシシギ Grey-tailed Tattler

有名スポットではないけれど、

この地域で、

この時期に、

このような環境なら、

何かシギやチドリがいるかもしれない…

と、地図の地形から予測し、事前情報なしで、ある浜辺を訪問しました。現地到着後すぐにキアシシギに会えたのが嬉しかったです。自分が予測した場所で実際に観察できると、自分の視点と感覚が、少しは野鳥に近づけたような気がして胸が躍ります。しかもこの時は思っていた以上の数の群れが見られたので、喜びは倍増でした。キアシシギ以外に観察できたのはイソシギのみでしたが、条件が揃えば他のシギチドリ類も多く飛来しそうな良い環境でした。

Looking at a map of an area that isn't a well-known birdwatching spot, I thought to myself: "In this region, at this time of year, on a beach like this... there just might be some waders." With that thought, and no prior information, I decided to visit.

常に幸運に恵まれるわけではありませんが、こうした手応えのある経験を積み重ねて、「野鳥を、自分で探して、見つける」という術を向上させていきたいと思います。

I was so happy to see Grey-tailed Tattlers after arriving at the spot. It was a great time to observe them actually in the place I thought they would like, as it made me feel closer to the point of view of the shorebirds, and I was glad to see larger flocks than I expected. I don't always have the luck to spot birds, but I hope to develop the skill to find wild birds on my own through these experiences.

I heard something call of birds from above in the forest, so I looked up and saw Pacific Swifts flying around through the gaps in the leaves of the trees in May, also spotted about three white-throated needletails in a a flock of Pacific Swift, in June.

After Typhoon No.6 台風6号

After Typhoon No. 6 passed on June 4th, I checked the nearby waterfront areas to see if any marsh terns, rare pelagic species, or shorebird vagrants had been blown inland. No such displacement was found this time—just this peaceful scenery.
